I am an Episcopal priest seeking to discover the connections between the everyday aspects of the life we all share and the transcendence that meets us in the enjoyment of simple things: food, fun, friends, etc.
Born in Dallas, Texas, I moved to New York City at the age of 18 to study theater at New York University, earning a B.F.A. in Drama while studying at the Experimental Theater Wing. During that time, I spent a year in Paris, which formed me in the ways of simple pleasures like a really great baguette, a good chunk of butter and a big ol’ glass of vin rouge. After graduation, I returned to Dallas with my husband-to-be where we made forays into the local theater scene before my restlessness led me to seek an M.A. in Culture and Creation Spirituality from Holy Names College in Oakland, CA. After marrying, my husband and I moved to Northampton, MA where he pursued an internship for his MA in Psychology (he is an MFT practicing in South Pasadena, CA).
Again, my restlessness led us to Los Angeles where I pursued a creatively-satisfying-yet-not-financially-lucrative career in screenwriting. While struggling to break in to the business, I found myself more and more drawn into ministry in the Episcopal church and began the process for ordination, a journey which took me through four different parishes, two seminaries (Fuller and Bloy House at Claremont) and much soul-searching, culminating in my ordination to the priesthood in January, 2014. But that ending was only a beginning, as the process of being molded by God’s hands is never over, and I am currently discerning my next steps in ministry and forming community. Thanks for taking the time to be on the journey with me, however briefly.
Blessings to you from God’s abundance,
The Rev. V.R. Marianne Zahn
